Chassis
Platforms based on the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor in the 478-pin package do not require a modified chassis (e.g., with additional mounting holes). Chassis for platforms based on the Intel® Pentium® 4 processor must have an ATX12V power supply and improved ventilation. We encourage integrators using ATX form-factor boards (D845GBV) to choose a chassis that complies with the ATX 2.01 (or later) specification. Integrators using microATX form-factor boards (D845GRG) should choose a chassis that complies with the microATX 1.0 (or later) specification. It is recommended to use a chassis on the tested chassis list to ensure compatibility with this platform and proper chassis airflow.
Power Supply
The D845GBV and D845GRG boards require an ATX12V compliant power supply that differs from previous ATX power supplies. The ATX12V power supply provides an additional 12V processor current via a 2x2 pin connector that is required for proper operation. Both desktop boards have two ATX12V compliant power supply connectors.
The power management functions of the boards require a power supply with a minimum +5V standby current (+5Vsb) of 800mA. Intel highly recommends that you use a power supply with 1.5 to 2.0 A on the +5Vsb line. As more standby capable components are added to the platform, more standby current is needed to support these components.
Processor
The boards were designed to support the Pentium 4 processor in the 478-pin package. Table 1 below lists the current processor support for the D845GBV and D845GRG boards.

† This desktop board and processor combination is under evaluation and not yet validated. Use of unsupported processors may result in improper operation, damage to the desktop board or processor, or reduced product life. Except as provided in Intel's Terms and Conditions of Sale for such products, INTEL ASSUMES NO LIABILITY WHATSOEVER, AND INTEL DISCLAIMS ANY EXPRESS OR IMPLIED WARRANTY, RELATING TO SALE AND/OR USE OF THE INTEL PRODUCTS INCLUDING LIABILITY OR WARRANTIES RELATING TO FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, MERCHANTABILITY, OR INFRINGEMENT OF ANY PATENT COPYRIGHT OR OTHER INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHT. This information is based on current expectations are subject to change without notice.
System Memory
The boards have two DIMM slots that support 200 MHz and 266 MHz DDR SDRAM system memory. The boards support both ECC and non-ECC DIMMs (ECC DIMMs will operate in non-ECC mode only). Mixed speed DIMM configuration will default to the slowest speed DIMM installed. All memory must comply with the following:
Graphics Adapters
The D845GBV and D845GRG boards are only compatible with 1.5V AGP graphics cards. Use of legacy 3.3V cards can result in damage to the card as well as the board.
ADD Cards
The D845GBV and D845GRG boards support AGP Digital Display (ADD) Cards. ADD cards fit into the AGP slot and do not require additional drivers because they utilize Intel Extreme Graphics. ADD cards provide additional video connectors such as a DVI connector (Digital Video Interface), used in many flat panel displays, and TV out with S-video and composite video, for standard definition television - NTSC and PAL formats.
Hard Drive
Each board's package includes two IDE cables. Either cable can connect two drives to the desktop board. The cables support the Ultra DMA-33 (40-contact, 40-conductor) or ATA-66/100 (40-contact, 80-conductor) transfer protocols and are backward compatible with drives using slower IDE transfer protocols.
I/O Peripherals
Peripheral Interfaces
The boards each have a diskette drive interface, two PS/2 ports, one serial port, one parallel port, and two IDE (ATA 100/66/33) connections. The boards also support up to six USB 2.0 ports; four ports routed to the back panel and two to the front panel connector.
Expansion Capabilities
The D845GBV board has six PCI slots, one optional CNR slot (shared with PCI slot 6), and one AGP connector. The AGP connector only supports the latest 1.5V 4X/2X graphics cards and not the 3.3V models. The CNR slot and PCI slot 6 are shared and cannot be used simultaneously.
The D845GRG board has three PCI slots, one optional CNR slot (shared with PCI slot 3), and one AGP connector. The AGP connector only supports the latest 1.5V 4X/2X graphics cards and not the 3.3V models. The CNR slot and PCI slot 3 are shared and cannot be used simultaneously.
Operating System
Windows* 98 Second Edition, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP support the D845GBV and D845GRG boards' ease of use, USB expansion, and power management features.
Note: Only Windows 2000 and Windows XP support USB 2.0. Installation of Windows 98 SE or Windows ME will result in standard USB 1.1 functionality.
