Nurturing the Spirit of Science & Technology amongst the Children of The Walled City Area of Chandni Chowk
Interaction of Students of Anglo Arabic School with Dr A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, former President of India at Anglo Arabic School on 11 August, 2010

The event was organised by Intel Education in partnership with Anglo Arabic School and Delhi Education Society and was graced by Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam (Former President of India), Mr. Mohammad Adeeb (Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha), Mr. Najeeb Jung (Vice Chancellor, Jamia Millia Islamia and President, Delhi Education Society), Mr. Naved Mumtaz (DCP-Delhi Police), Mr. Mehmood Zia (Area Counselor, Chandni Chowk). Over 2000 children; 100 teachers from Anglo Arabic School, its affiliate schools and other schools in the area; officials from Jamia Millia Islamia; local MCD officials; Delhi Police officials; members of academia and other professionals also witnessed the event and the learner showcasing.

Two groups of learners showcased their projects on ‘Unemployment’ and on the ‘Problem of Girl Child Education’. Dr. Kalam took time to go through the entire presentation on unemployment and keenly listened to what the children had to say. The highlight of the event was the request made by the learners to the former President and everyone attending the event that they take an oath never to discriminate between boys and girls. The former President promptly took the oath thereby promising his whole hearted support for the project on girl child education. He personally talked to all the learners who presented their projects and asked them about their aspirations. Students shared their desire to be scientists, doctors, teachers and IPS officers. The former President appreciated their efforts and congratulated them on their projects.

Dr Kalam gave a call to the students – ‘Achieve knowledge and make the country proud’ . He made the students take an oath that ‘A small aim in life is a crime’ - the students need to go beyond classroom studies, be creative and seek knowledge from all sources – he earnestly asked all students to ‘Dream Big and ‘Aim Big’. The talk was followed by an interactive session between the students and Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.

On the occasion, Intel presented a memento to Dr. Abdul Kalam. Mr. Anshul took the opportunity to thank the former President for gracing the occasion and thanked the school for giving Intel Education the opportunity to be its partner in nurturing the spirit of science and technology among students.

Mr. Islamuddin, the head of Anglo Arabic School in his vote of thanks expressed appreciation for Intel’s support in implementing Intel Education Initiatives in the school since 2007. He said that the event was made possible only because of the support from Intel. He shared that all present will never forget such an experience.

After the event, children gave feedback that they would never forget this day and would cherish this event throughout their lives. There was pride and a sense of feeling special that the event organised in their school was supported by global technology leader Intel – and gratitude for the tremendous exposure they got. In a special way, Intel has helped these children to dream big and have bigger aims in life……….just as Dr. Abdul Kalam asked them to…...
