Students of different public and private sector institutions from all over the country presented more than 80 research projects at the Intel ISEF affiliated Intel National Science Fair, Pakistan held from 27 to 30 January, 2013 at Islamabad. More than 200 students selected from all provinces of Pakistan participated in this mega event, short listed earlier from almost 8000 students who participated in the process from all over Pakistan at the grass root level, out of which only 1000 students were able to participate in the five provincial fairs.
While the fair continued for four days, public could visit the fair on the last two days. Four individual projects and two team projects were selected by a panel of more than 45 eminent judges and awarded at the closing ceremony on Wednesday, 30th January, 2013. Ten students who won the national science fair will represent Pakistan at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) from 12-17 May 2013 to be held at Phoenix, Arizona, USA. These grand winners of the Intel National Science Fair this year are Haris Bin Ashraf, Muhammad Ahsan Nawaz, Essa Bin Qasim, Jawaria Nisar, Qaiser Ali Shah, Sajid Khan, Ali Yazdan, Fatima Moin Veera, Hania Hasan and Umme Salma Shabbir Gadriwala.
At the National Fair, the students presented science projects in eight different categories, including physics, astronomy, environmental sciences, energy and transportation, robotics and alternative energy, medicine and health sciences and so on. From a Papaya-based cure for dengue fever to efficient wind-mill energy production and space exploration satellites, the students came up with innovative research-based projects; most of these ideas were based on practical applications that could resolve Pakistan’s problems.
Earlier, Dr. Manzoor Soomro, Chairman, Pakistan Science Foundation, urged the students to focus on scientific research and discover their true potential instead of following the career choice thrust upon them due to parental or peer pressure while he addressed the students at the opening ceremony held on Monday, 28th January, 2013. The chief guest also appreciated the efforts of Intel Pakistan for arranging such opportunities for the students. He said, “Such events are very necessary to enhance the skills of the students and the fair would provide an opportunity to young talented students from all over the country to showcase their scientific abilities to national and international audience”.

Intel Pakistan marked the end of its national science competition by announcing the winners of the Intel National Science Fair, who will go on to represent Pakistan at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) 2012, to be held in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.
The team grand winners of the Intel National Science Fair are; Shiza Ghulab, Mahnoor Hassan and Bushra Shahed from Institute of Computer and Management Sciences, Peshawar. The individual grand winners are; Musa Rahim Khan from Agha Khan Higher Secondary School, Chitral and Syed Shahzeb Hussain from Army Public School and College, Command and Staff College, Quetta. Widely attended by youth from all across Pakistan, the National Science Fair showcased more than 85 science projects submitted by young scientists from all across the nation who qualified for a place in the National Science Fair after rigorous competition at provincial levels. "Intel recognizes that curiosity, critical thinking and a strong foundation in math and science are necessary for tomorrow’s workforce to compete for the high-tech jobs of the future. The National Science Fair encourages high school students to embrace and explore their interests in these subjects, and pursue paths that may lead to solving the world’s most pressing issues," said Naveed Siraj, country manager at Intel Pakistan. "With their commitment and achievement in the various science subjects, these finalists have singularized themselves as Pakistan’s top young researchers. Together with Intel we congratulate these exceptional students and commend the mentors, teachers, schools, and parents that have contributed to their success." The National Science Fair, organized every year by Intel Pakistan in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Science & Technology, is part of Intel’s efforts to contribute to science education reform in Pakistan. Projects displayed at the National Science Fair were assessed by a panel of renowned judges.

The National Science Fair showcased 84 science projects by more than 200 young scientists from all across the nation who qualified for a place in the National Science Fair after rigorous competition at district and provincial levels. The National Science Fair organized every year by Intel Pakistan Corporation in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Education, is part of Intel’s efforts to contribute to science education reform in Pakistan.
Federal Minister for Education Sardar Aseff Ahmed Ali Khan said that the government is endeavoring to improve the quality of education by promoting initiatives in fields of science and technology. He was addressing the closing award distribution ceremony of the National Science Fair as the Chief Guest.
“It is encouraging to note that each year more schools and students are participating in the Intel Science Fairs, with increased drive to excel in the areas of science and research, even from the scattered and rural populations of the country,” said Mr. Naveed Siraj, Country Manager, Intel Pakistan Corporation. “Intel is grateful to the Ministry of Education for its support and cooperation with this initiative.”
“Today, globalization and technological change have created a new global economy, powered by technology, fueled and driven by information. We wholeheartedly support the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair which provides greater avenues for interaction between students and their peers on a global platform,” the minister said.
Intel Pakistan Corporation marked the end of its National Science Fair held from 14-18 February, 2011 by announcing the winners of the Intel National Science Fair, who will represent Pakistan at the Intel International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2011 to be held in May at Los Angeles, California, USA. The grand winners include Fatima Sohail from Defence Authority Model High School, Karachi for her project “Generation of Electricity with the help of Vertical Air through a modified Wind Mill” and Habibullah Hal Mohammadi from Pak Turk International School & College, Lahore for his project “Organic Battery”. The group grand winners are Ambreen Bibi and Mehwish Ghafoor from Federal Government College for Women, G-10/4, Islamabad for their project “Degradation of Environmental Pollutants with Nano-composites”. The National Science Fair is part of the Intel Education Initiative, which is focused on collaborating with educators and government around the world to improve the quality of science and mathematics education and to help students develop the higher order thinking skills they need to participate and succeed in a knowledge-based economy.

Traveling from all corners of Pakistan, there were 200 participants (students and teachers) at the National Science Fair 2009-2010, these students showcased 74 projects. Earlier they had participated at the district and provincial levels to reach the National Science Fair where they competed to participate at the Intel® International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel® ISEF).
The National Science Fair is the only fair in Pakistan affiliated to the Intel® ISEF. The competition is held in collaboration between Intel and the Ministry of Education, Govt. of Pakistan.

Projects displayed at the National Science Fair were assessed for further selection in the upcoming Intel ISEF 2010 to be held in San Jose, California. The national finals were judged by a panel of nationally renowned scientists and mathematicians headed by Scientific Review Committee (SRC).
