Back-up #1: Day 1 Field Trip to 2010 Korea Science Festival
August 3-8, 2010 • KINTEX

Since 1997, the Korea Science Festival is the largest science festival in Korea and is an opportunity for people of all ages to take part in science, engineering, and technology activities. It has become the most distinguished annual scientific and cultural event in Korea along with a growing international recognition. It features not only exhibitions of state-of-the-art technologies, but also a wide variety of hands-on science programs that allow participants to experience science firsthand. Under a theme of Science for Dream─Science 4D: Diversity, Dialogue, Dream for another Decade , the 2010 Korea Science Festival is being prepared in two major directions according to KOFAC’s aims. One is to emphasize on the global issues through a variety of special exhibitions, including a photo exhibition on the International Year of Biodiversity by UNESCO and the RGB Campaign, a campaign for raising public awareness on climate change, disease, energy, and food and water shortage. Another is to promote the involvement of the public sector including multinational corporations, trends of gadgets for another decade and future-oriented products from industries. The participants include children, college students, and professional researchers. KOFAC encourages overseas organization to participating in the festival and introduce their hands-on science programs to the Korean audience. In the 2009 Festival, 204 organizations presented 470 programs and it brought a great success with approximately 205,500 visitors during 6 days.

Back up #2: Day 2 Field Trip to International Science & Engineering Camp (ISEC)
August 1-15, 2010 • College of Engineering, SNU

ISEC (International Science & Engineering Camp) is a research-oriented international science camp, in which that about 120 students from more than 14 countries participate in 2010. It is a two-week program that consists of science and engineering researches in top-level university facilities, field trips to major institutes/industries, cultural experiences and many more. KOFAC expects that ISEC will help participants build a foundation for cooperation among youth in the science and technology field and international mindset and be inspired in the careers of science and technology. ISEC 2010 is the 5th event since its start in 2002 (it is a biennial event).

Objectives:
(1) To build a foundation of exchanges and cooperation among youth in the field of science and technology by encouraging the formation of an international mindset through collaborative research activities, personal interactions, and cross-cultural experiences with participants from different countries.
(2) To inspire students to undertake careers in science and engineering by exposing them to laboratory research activities at early age and by providing them with concrete awareness and vision for a career in science and engineering through personal contact with scientists and engineers.
(3) To attempt to address the limitations of science education in the classroom through extracurricular science activities.
