An ICT Workshop for Education Department, Govt. of Meghalaya was conducted on September 27 & 28, 2011 at IT Lab, Shillong. Six participants from Directorate of Higher and Technical Education and thirteen from various educational institutions participated in the workshop. The main objective of the workshop was to facilitate the officials to acquire and improve basic skills on IT besides promoting computer literacy and internet knowledge.

The session began with a welcome note followed by the participants introducing themselves.

The first day of the workshop focused on the basics of computer, where the participants were given a feel of the advantages of using technology in day to day life. The participants were introduced to Microsoft office (MS-word, MS-excel, MS-power-point), which they found very interesting and useful. Most of the participants were first time users of computers and they were very keen on working with computers and exploring the Internet.

The second day of the workshop was designed on working with internet. There were sessions on the use of E-mail, sending and receiving mail, how to attach files and folders. Participants were given an idea of how to use Google docs for online document sharing and searching for information on the internet by using search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing. Participants also created their email IDs. Few of the participants showed their interest in using Facebook and were assisted in creating Facebook accounts.

The workshop was conducted with the objective of guiding government officials to use technology efficiently and to recognize its usefulness in their day to day official work.

Shri. F. R. Khankongor , Secretary Education with Smt. P. Pyrbot, Jt. Director, Higher and Technical Education visited the first day of the training session.

The participants found the workshop very enlightening and informative, and requested similar kind of trainings in the future as well. The enthusiasm was evident from the comments of the participants during the interaction session; some of the comments are as follows:

We learnt many things especially on those subjects that we had no knowledge before, especially on Power Point and Internet.
