Promoting STEM Education through Intel ISEF

ISEF orientation workshops were conducted to engage the students of grades 9-12 with scientific methodology and research during September, 2010; 42 such workshops were held all across Pakistan with over 4,500 students and more than 550 teachers participating. The objective of the workshops is to equip science students with skills and positive attitudes towards scientific research and presentation of their research findings. Specifically, the aim is to discuss basic scientific research methods and to outline the guidelines for participating in the Intel ISEF.

Promoting STEM Education through Intel ISEFMany students and teachers participated pro-actively in the discussions that followed presentation by the resource persons, and stressed the need to bridge the gap between researchers / scientists and educationists / policy makers, and to forge linkages between science research and science curricula. There was also consensus that there is need to give research more prominence socially and through media.

Improved acquisition of skills by students and closer supervision at the time of the laboratory work, further needs to be designed with clear objectives as most of the science subject teaching is perceived to be theoretical. Scientists need to be more proactive in engaging with students.

Joining Hands for Better Tomorrow"Very informative, executed with tremendous commitment, really praise worthy, the authorities in Pakistan need to adopt something similar for all kinds of trainings of teachers. Integrating technology with training of teachers is a unique blend, when majority of teachers avoid bringing radical changes in the education system at the school level." – Shaigan Shareef Malik, Additional Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Islamabad

As the realm of intellectual accessibility expands at amazing rates (due to greater global collaboration and access to information), students of tomorrow will need to be their own guides as they explore the body of information that is at their fingertips. The next generation will be required to learn information quickly, use that information to solve new and novel problems, and then present those solutions in creative and effective ways. The effective students of tomorrow’s world will be independent learners, strong problem solvers and effective designers.
