Intel Pakistan Signs MoU with Pakistan Science Foundation to Support Education Initiatives

Intel Pakistan signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF - Federal Ministry of Science & Technology) to support Intel Pakistan in holding Science Fairs all over the country. Secretary, Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) Mr. Akhlaq Ahmad Tarar was the Chief Guest who witnessed the signing ceremony to encourage both the organizations in their science promotional pursuits. A large number of scientists from different organizations and media persons were present on this occasion.

The MoU will bring Intel Pakistan and PSF together to work for accelerating the pace and scale of education in Pakistan and will create awareness and promote research in Sciences. Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), established in 1973 through an Act of Parliament, working under Federal Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST), is a premier agency for promotion of science and technology in the country through a number of programmes including funding for scientific and technological research, Academia-Industry Linkages for Applied Research Projects, popularization of science through Science Caravans, Science & Technology Fairs and Travelling Expos, Establishment of Science Centres and Museums and introduction of inquiry-based science education concept in educational institutions of the country.

PSF works to promote scientific research and provide funding for research projects in the areas of Agricultural Sciences, Biological Sciences, Bio-technology and Genetic Engineering, Chemical Sciences, Information Technology, Mathematical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Earth Sciences, Medical Sciences and Physics. The Foundation has so far funded 1031 research projects in various fields of Science and Technology and has been supporting Intel in conducting the Intel ISEF affiliated National Science Fairs ever since the inception of the program in Pakistan 2003.

Under the MoU, both the organizations will work together to implement the Intel Science Fairs Program all across Pakistan for the betterment of economic condition of the masses by creating awareness, promoting and popularization of research in sciences and mathematics through mutual collaborative activities, aiming to infuse a stronger spirit of discovery in schoolchildren and to increase their interest in science and technology. Science fair will help to achieve this purpose, thus strengthening science education at pre-college level. PSF will support Intel Pakistan in arranging trainings for science teachers, holding provincial and national science fairs all across Pakistan, including orientation workshops and providing resource persons, mentors and judges, cash awards for the winners, and logistic support wherever possible.

Sharing his thoughts at the occasion, Naveed Siraj, Country Manager Intel Pakistan said, “Intel wholeheartedly believes in the powerful impact of knowledge and its application within our community. We are very excited to be partnering up with Pakistan Science Foundation as this will encourage and inspire next generation of innovators and yield significant positive results not just by enhancing training and educating, but also encouraging students to convert their ideas into reality. Through a sustained public-private partnership with organizations like PSF, we work at international, national, and local level and invest heavily in education programs adapted to address the technological needs of the country.”

Speaking on this occasion, the chief guest, Mr. Akhlaq Ahmed Tarar said that the collaboration between PSF and Intel Pakistan is a welcoming example of public-private partnership for a national cause to achieve the goals of science and technology promotion in the country. He lauded Intel Pakistan and PSF’s role in betterment of the society through science promotional activities among students. He thanked both the organizations and assured full support of the Federal Ministry of Science and Technology in their science education activities. The Secretary said, “It is a very happy moment that Intel Pakistan, a private sector organization as a corporate social responsibility has extended a hand for jointly executing educational activities program already being undertaken by PSF”.

Chairman, Pakistan Science Foundation, Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Soomro said that Intel and PSF are working together for the past many years and the Foundation is helping Intel in science fairs by providing science experts as judges at the fairs.

Later, the Chief Guest awarded shields to scientists, who performed duty as judges at the Intel National Science Fair held in January, 2013.

Over the years, Intel Pakistan has partnered with and facilitated many public and private sector organizations with programs that increase access to technology - helping people with better education, improved healthcare, and economic opportunity. Intel has been instrumental in creating innovative new solutions and building a future of opportunity for the youth of Pakistan.
