BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition

Categories and Projects
The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition encourages students to become more aware of their environment. It stimulates students to question and inquire into current practices and applications and to seek to understand more fundamental principles governing that environment. Students work either individually or in teams to plan research projects, gather data, collate information, test results, draw conclusions, and evaluate projects. Projects are presented under one of the following categories:
  • Chemical, Physical, and Mathematical Sciences
  • Biological and Ecological Sciences
  • Social and Behavioural Sciences
  • Technology

Intel Sponsorship and Prizes
Intel Ireland is a major sponsor of The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. The grand prize award for the best project in the chemical, physical and mathematical sciences category is an all expenses paid trip to America to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in May. The Seagate Young Innovators Competition

The Seagate Young Innovators competition is an annual event designed to celebrate the achievements of young people in the areas of science and technology and to raise public awareness and support of these disciplines. The event comprises of exhibitions of science and technology project work from schools in the primary and secondary sectors in Northern Ireland. In recent years more than 500 students between the ages of 8 and 18 years have participated.

Sponsorship and Prizes
Intel Ireland sponsors the prize for the competition's technology category. The winners of this category, along with their teacher, receive an all expenses paid trip to America to compete in the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in May. SciFest

SciFest is a local one-day science fair held in third level colleges and open to all second level students. A SciFest fair includes a competition and exhibition of projects, a selection of science talks, science demonstrations in the college laboratories and a prize-giving ceremony. SciFest aims to encourage a love of science through an investigative approach to learning and to provide an opportunity for students to display their scientific discoveries. Chemical, Physical, and Mathematical Sciences.

Scifest is jointly funded by Intel and Discover Science and Engineering and is supported by a number of other partners. The project thus creates a valuable link between the second and third level education sectors and between education and industry.

Intel Mini Scientist

The Intel Mini Scienitst Exhibiton is a program which allows Primary school students to develop science related projects which are then exhibited at fairs held within their own schools. Winning projects are then chosen to go forward to a regional final event which is hosted at Intel in Leixlip, Co. Kildare.

In 2008, winners of the regional fair went on to compete at the Primary Science section at the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2009. The program supports the Primary Science curriculum and is a great way to encourage enthusiasm and practical learning in the area of science. The initiative aims to encourage a love of science through an investigative approach to learning. The programme is currently targeted at 4th, 5th and 6th class students and typically runs from September to December annually.

In 2008, the Exhibition took place at 15 schools in the Kildare region with over 230 projects being exhibited by upwards of 700 students.
