The Business Process

Any Israeli/European company with leading-edge technological and manufacturing expertise in one of Intel's segments (see below) that meets the listed criteria can submit an application to the Industry Development team. The Process has 4 major phases and is described in the chart below.

Investigation and Relevancy Check:
After the team has received the application from the company, it would be evaluated for relevancy. The purpose of the relevancy check is to define if a connection exists between Intel's roadmap and the company's proposed business.

Evaluation and Collaboration approval:

The Criteria

The following are the basic criteria for the evaluation process. The companies are looked at from both technological and business aspects.

Competitiveness Assessment of the market competitiveness of the product as measured by quality, performance and pricing.
Market/ Operational Need General market and operational need for the specific product, technology or service.
Product maturity Development stage of the specific product offered (idea, design, feasibility, prototype, Alpha site, Beta site, etc.), and "time to market" of the final product vs. the market needs.
Uniqueness A different approach to a technical solution, a breakthrough in technology, an easier, more cost effective approach or improvement to an existing operation or process step.
Management/ Professional Assessment of the organization and professional strength capabilities of the company and the project.
Relevancy to Intel Assessment of the project's relevancy to Intel's current and future technologies.
Company strength Description of the company and definition of its strength (products, people, infrastructure).
Intel's added value Definition of the support required from Intel for the specific to the projects project (process development, technical definition of the equipment, software development etc.).

Evaluation and collaboration approval

Once an application form has been received, a panel of professionals who are bound by the confidentiality agreement will evaluate it. The evaluation will be conducted according to the criteria specified above. Intel experts from the various segments will be asked for their professional inputs per the listed criteria. Simultaneously, in case of Beta testing, the TME EMEA Business Development team will try to identify a customer/user for the specific project support.

Each project will be rated on the basis of the criteria and a preliminary ROI (Return On Investment) will be performed, based on the expected improvements. Only projects whose ROI is attractive will be recommended for the program. The Industry Development team will also evaluate the level of support that will be required.

The recommendation and support methods will be presented to the Projects Review Meeting (PRM) of the specific project or to the Investment & collaboration MRC, which meets every month, and which must grant final approval. The approval cycle, from the time a formal application has been submitted, is approximately 6-8 weeks, with projects launched throughout the year.

Project Support Agreement

Once the project is approved, the company and Intel sign the TME EMEA Business Development Support Agreement. This agreement defines the project's scope, timetable and milestones, success criteria, responsibilities (Intel's and the company's), etc.

Project Definition

There are 3 types of projects Definition determined by the level of support from Intel:

One Pager Support Agreement: Parties sign a Short Business agreement and an NDA agreement based on low level support, including mainly information on technical requirements, market needs, external and internal contacts for the specific Technology or tool.

  • No materials or wafers transfer.
  • No engineering support assigned to the project.
  • Segment Manager supplies all Information.

This type of contract is usually signed with an immature technology company or incubator level company, where there is not yet clear if there is a working technology or that the offered technology is applicable to Intel needs.

Feasibility Agreement: A Local Support Agreement and CNDA is signed between the parties (TME Industry Development – EMEA and the External Company). Agreement includes Medium Level support described by the "gives and gets" listed in the contract.

Support elements, in general, are:

  • Local engineering support is assigned to the project and
  • Material and/or Wafers are transfer for joint development,
  • Market needs,
  • Manufacturability requirements,
  • Timing,
  • Technology needs
  • Optional Alpha and Beta Test at the local site,
  • etc.

Local support agreements are generally signed with companies that have an interesting but not yet proven technology. The purpose of the contract is to support the company in completing this step and bring the results to the corporate level approval and further steps decision.

Corporate level support agreement:

Parties will sign a Corporate Level Support agreement describing the commitment of both parties to the collaboration. This agreement reflects an High level support/collaboration, Including:

  • Technology Development direct support,
  • US beta Testing, Material & Wafers transfer,
  • IP development ownership
  • in addition to the Std elements mentioned above

In general these contracts are being signed with companies that have a technology that fits the technology gaps road map of Intel or had the potential of big savings through technology improvement.

Some times, Intel will perform also financial investments in these companies due to the strategic fit. This type of contracts is used as part of Business agreements that supports the investments worthiness.
