Executive Summary

Established in November 1998 as Intel’s first research lab in Asia-Pacific region, the Intel China Research Center (ICRC) is focused on advanced technology research and has been an integral part of Intel's worldwide network of R&D centers, and work closely with teams in US, Russia, India and Korean.

The mission of Intel China Research Center is,

Empower the future of the digital world through research and platform innovations, and drive strategic technology collaborations with Chinese government, academia and industry.

ICRC has conducted applied research in the areas of communication technology, microprocessor technology and system technology, covered computer architecture, wireless technologies, future applications and workload analysis, compiler technology and mobile runtime environment, platform virtualization, human-machine interfaces. Many of the technologies developed in ICRC have impacted Intel’s technology initiatives and contributed to Intel’s current and future products. ICRC is expanding its R&D into new technology areas to drive Intel’s technology leadership worldwide. ICRC currently has a staff of more than 70 researchers most with PhD or MS from top PRC universities. ICRC also hosts many visiting professors and researchers from top universities in PRC and oversea.

ICRC currently has two research labs that Communications technology lab and Microprocessors technology labs, and one center, Technology Policy and Standards Department and Advanced Platform Development Center,

  • Communications Technology Lab (CTL) is devoted to research and advanced development on next generation wired and wireless communication technologies for Intel platforms. One domain is the networking performance research for many-core server platforms. Another domain is the next generation wireless broadband technology research. The Communications Technology Lab in ICRC is also actively working with local industry and universities to develop new technologies and promote new technologies in China.
  • Microprocessor Technology Lab (MTL) is focused on developing key technologies for future microprocessors and platforms. The Microprocessor Technology Lab in ICRC currently has three focused research areas. One is new programming systems technologies that will help programmers to develop applications to harness the computing power and new capabilities of future Intel multi-core CPU architectures. Another one is the research and development of a mobile execution environment to support future mobile application development and platform studies. The third research area is the workload analysis of emerging applications to drive the definition of future Intel multi-core CPU architectures.
  • Technology Policy and Standards Department: Focus area is technology policy and standards.
  • Advanced Platform Development Center (APDC) is chartered to innovate component technologies and system architectures for Intel future chipsets and platform products, and focused on research and development on natural interfaces to enable new usages, devices and markets.

Many of the technologies developed in ICRC have impacted Intel’s technology initiatives and contributed to Intel’s current and future products. Example of research innovations from ICRC include:

  • Itanium-based Open Research Compiler, developed jointly between ICRC and the Chinese Academy of Science, which is widely used today by the research community,
  • The research on Java managed runtime has influenced next generation XScale micro-architecture to deliver the best Java performance
  • The Audio Visual Speech Recognition (AVSR) system using computer vision to assist speech recognition has greatly improved speech recognition accuracy in real-world environments
  • The Microphone Array and audio signal processing technology which defines a new audio standard enables a wide range of new usage models has been integrated into the Florence mobile platform.
  • The research on future statistical based applications and workload analysis has impacted next generation multi-core CPU architecture

ICRC is an integral part of Intel’s global R&D network and collaborates with R&D centers in the U.S.A., Russia, India and Korea. Intel’s R&D model also fosters cooperation among leading technology companies and universities to develop advanced technologies and define industry standards.

University Collaboration

ICRC is one of Intel's biggest oversea research labs. Its innovations complement other labs along with Intel product and process groups. ICRC sponsors advanced research at a number of leading universities in China. The university research program is a long term strategic program in ICRC. The objective is to initialize and develop the research collaboration with universities in China, thus to develop together on the research expertise and talent pool. The current research collaboration areas range from wireless roaming, high performance computing, next generation internet test-bed, future workload analysis, compiler technology, and device and circuit research. Intel is currently engaged with over tens of universities across China on sponsored research, thesis research sponsorship, visiting scholar program, internship program, and campus technical lecture series.
