Increase Productivity - Boost Employee Productivity with High-Performance PCs
Seite drucken
Would you ask a mechanic to overhaul an engine with a set of box wrenches? Or give a lumberjack a handsaw to cut down a tree?

Probably not. But many companies, unaware of the productivity benefits of new, high-performance desktop PCs  and wireless notebook PCs , are doing something very similar — asking employees to be efficient and productive using client systems deployed in the late 1990s. In recent years, some companies have delayed their regular PC refresh cycle in an effort to save money, forcing employees to use 20th century technology to tackle 21st century business challenges. Ironically, what appears to be a simple way of saving the company money may actually be costing them money in the form of diminished employee productivity and IT efficiency.

Intel IT and Employee Productivity

A new wireless notebook PC can provide nearly 100 hours of additional productivity per employee per year. That's what Intel's IT department found when they began migrating users from mobile Pentium® III processor-based notebooks to Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology-based notebooks in early 2003. Once deployed, Intel IT began a two-phase study to understand the impacts of this wireless mobile migration. The first phase of the study, entitled "The Workplace Hits the Road: Intel IT Assesses Wireless Productivity", was a qualitative look at employee perceptions of their experience with the new notebooks. In the second phase, documented in "Effects of Wireless Mobile Technology on Employee Productivity", Intel IT found that the average employee using a wireless notebook computer can get a week's worth of work done in two hours and eight minutes less time, a savings of five percent over the average work week.

New Tools for New Usage Models

New technologies and tools are changing the way business gets done, giving companies a competitive edge that permits greater flexibility and increased responsiveness, solving problems and capitalizing on opportunities in real time instead of the next business day, when it may be too late. In addition, new usage models for high-performance client systems provide the foundation for even greater end-user productivity. For example, Enterprise Instant Messaging (EIM) is changing the way business employees communicate, and high-performance PCs running Windows* 2000 or XP are required to deploy presence detection and enterprise-class instant messaging. In addition, enabling Voice over IP (VoIP) is now a viable alternative for some traditional voice traffic. New Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology-based notebook PCs can provide a quality audio experience with Wi-Fi and VoIP enabled, creating a truly mobile office.**

Determining the Optimal Client Mix

What's the optimal mix of desktop PCs and notebook PCs for your company? The answer depends on many factors, including the type of industry, job functions of employees, current technology infrastructure, and more. In general, according to Gartner Research, "…enterprises with less than 35 percent of their employees using notebooks may not be receiving full capacity from their workers."*** To ensure maximum productivity from your company's workforce and the greatest benefit from your technology investments, start by conducting a segmentation analysis on your user base and identifying groups of users with similar usage models and requirements. The results of the analysis can guide decisions on how to maximize value and choices to different user segments. For example, segmentation analysis might lead an IT organization to proactively deploy:

  • Notebook PCs  based on Intel® Centrino® Processor Technology for those who travel frequently or need data access during meetings or away from their desks. Notebook PCs are also a good choice for frequent day-extenders, or for employees who regularly work from home or from remote locations.
  • Wireless networking for ad hoc collaborators and workers who spend considerable time in meetings and need access to their data and/or to the Internet.
  • Desktop PCs  with the  Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor with HT Technology,^ for both mainstream and performance users alike. Rich, powerful desktop PCs provide business users with the ability to stay productive while multitasking, or while using processor-intensive applications.
In the end, whether you choose to refresh your desktop PCs, notebook PCs or both, your company will benefit from the increased productivity of your workforce, as well as the enhanced security and of your client environment.
** WME support requires a WME enabled access point and requires a PC software upgrade that will be available in 2H'04. Available on 802.11 b/g only. Check with your PC manufacturer for details on availability.
