As companies of all sizes have become more dependent on desktop and notebook computers, they’ve become more concerned about the security of those systems and the resources needed to maintain and manage them. Most IT shops spend around 70 percent of their budget on ongoing operations and maintenance, which leaves only 30 percent for driving new initiatives.
Businesses are also hungry for better desktop and notebook security. With more business-critical data residing on notebook computers that are carried far beyond the security of the company walls, there is a crying need for better notebook defense. Computer theft and downtime can be devastating to any business.
Anything you can do to make your management software more capable in these areas can save your customers money and give you a competitive advantage.
Enhance your software’s ability to fend off intrusive threats and simplify the management of both desktops and notebooks by enabling for Intel® Active Management Technology (Intel® AMT) version 3.0. Desktop computers based on Intel® Core™2 processors with Intel® vPro™ processor technology and notebook computers based on Intel® Centrino® with vPro technology take full advantage of Intel AMT.
Intel AMT 3.0 provides several new capabilities that your customers will want:
- Support for Intel Centrino with vPro technology-based notebook PCs. The latest notebook computers containing Intel Centrino with vPro technology now include the same Intel AMT capabilities as desktop PCs with the Intel Core 2 processor with vPro technology. Companies can now extend built-in, hardware-based management and proactive security capabilities to their growing fleet of notebook computers whether they are wired or wireless
- Support for industry-standard manageability interfaces. Intel AMT 3.0 supports the WS-MAN (Web Services Manageability) and DASH management standards. WS-MAN is more capable, extensible, and secure than Alert Standard Format (ASF) and standardizes communication between your management application and the PC. The DASH standards enable you to standardize management activity within the PC.
- Enhanced system defense features. Intel has enhanced the system defense capability in Intel AMT 3.0 to more proactively discover and defend against malicious software attacking the network. As well as identifying known malicious patterns and threats, Intel AMT helps your security application to identify and defend against unknown threats. Intel AMT also helps to protect your customer’s network by making it easier to keep software and virus protection consistent and up to date.
By optimizing your software for Intel AMT 3.0 and encouraging your customers to upgrade to PCs based on the Intel Core 2 processor with vPro technology and Intel Centrino with vPro technology, you’ll reduce their management worries and expenses while improving their business uptime. You’ll be able to enhance your offerings with hardware-based features such as out-of-band system inventory, diagnosis, and repair; security agent presence checking; and enhanced system defense filters.
Increase your competitive edge by creating an Intel Manageability Focus project to enable your software for Intel AMT 3.0. The Intel® Software Partner Program provides you with a range of technical and marketing resources to streamline your technology-enabling work and help you sell your product once it’s done.
As an example, HSBSoft Technologies, a management software firm in Bangalore, India, created a manageability project to take advantage of Intel resources such as the Manageability Developer Community. This online community provides tools, developer kits, white papers, blogs, and online discussion forums for Intel® Software Partner Program members that are enabling their applications for Intel AMT. “Optimizing our product for Intel AMT could have taken us 8 to 10 months, but with the Intel AMT Software Development Kit and Intel assistance, it took only three months,” says Satish Kumar V, technical director for HSBSoft Technologies.
Similarly, Aranda Software of Bogota, Colombia, used the Manageability Developer Community extensively. “The blogs were really helpful. They’re written by Intel engineers who are working with Intel AMT every day. We submitted questions to the developer community forum and got fast answers—always within a day,” says Maria Camila Gomez, project manager for Aranda Software. “We reduced our coding time by 50 percent, which not only sped our time-to-market but decreased our development expenses.”
Aranda is enabling all appropriate products for Intel AMT and sees agentless PC management as a key competitive advantage. “With Intel AMT, our software can provide inventory and remote PC management features without having an agent installed in the machine we want to manage,” Gomez says. “Often, our customers want to take control of a machine that is turned off; using Intel AMT, they can not only take control of it but troubleshoot and often repair it.”
