Community college struggles with rising enrollment, shrinking budget
Community colleges are caught in the middle of the economic downturn. On one side, enrollment is surging as more people seek degrees and training that could help them find work. At the same time, budgets are shrinking as states cut back on expenditures.

At one southern California community college, these combined pressures have led to yearly increases in enrollment and ongoing reductions in IT staffing. The school is now the college of choice for nearly 400,000 residents from seven surrounding cities. And the college’s aging IT infrastructure—which includes everything from data center storage to the desktops used in each department— was unable to keep up with the needs of the ever-growing student body, as well as staff and instructors.
