I'm a PhD holder in Polymer Science through a joint program between Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Penang and Universitaet Osnabrueck (Germany). Joined Intel at the turn of the millennium as a senior materials engineer ever since!
My Motto in Life
Continuous learning, and continue to increase your knowledge bank. Be a learner every day.
I'm Intel Malaysia's 1st female Principal Engineer! My secrets to success
Persistency and patience!
Persistency: continue to believe in yourself and the system.
Patience: just like a plant, it needs time to nurture and grow.
Intel provides a good career ground for those looking for challenge, fast and rapid pace. It is also an avenue for you to meet lots of people even if it is virtual. Honestly, I did not choose Intel as my 1st choice. I actually joined another MNC instead (south of Malaysia). I let go my earlier choice due to commitment to my ‘then-boyfriend’ – now my husband. I told him I will give Intel a try till he completes his PhD. I left Intel in 2004 as my husband joined a research lab in Kuala Lumpur and I left Intel to be closer to him, but I came back to Intel 9 months later: this tells you the attraction that I have with Intel.
Intel was once again included on DiversityMBA’s 50 Out Front Best Places for Women & Diverse Managers to Work list which recognizes the top 50 companies that are working to increase the advancement of women and people of color into leadership positions. DiversityMBA evaluated companies on recruitment and retention, representation, workplace inclusion, succession planning and accountability. Intel is dedicated to increasing the representation of women and under-represented minorities.
I joined Intel as an intern in 2003 while doing my undergraduate degree with MMU (Multimedia University, Malaysia). I was already part of the Intel scholarship program studying Electronics Engineering majoring in Computer. After I finished my degree, I re-joined the team that I interned with, and have been with Intel ever since!
I really didn’t feel any distinction between being a female and male. We always work together as a team. However, there have been occasions where as a female, I do bring a different perspective in discussions and it adds value to the considerations for a decision. As a female engineer, I believe I do bring a different perspective in discussions.
My fondest memory of Intel
One of my best memories was when my boss gave the opportunity to lead a team of engineers. I was quite surprised that he felt I was ready for it. He said “Ann, I know you’re ready for this - I will only sign you up for success, not failure!” That gave me a lot of confidence.
I believe that, besides the opportunity to work on leading technologies, the Intel culture and environment allow me to thrive and grow. Intel is a wholesome company to be in; you will be challenged in a creative and fun environment.
