Mobile workers present challenges for desktop virtualization, particularly with approaches such as virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) that assume a persistent connection. This was a concern for the IT leaders at FMC Corporation, a diversified global chemical company with a mobile workforce. The firm’s salespeople often call on agricultural, mining, and manufacturing customers in areas where Internet connectivity is marginal at best.

René Laureyns, corporate IT desktop analyst at FMC, describes how his team is exploring Intelligent Desktop Virtualization (IDV) to deliver virtual desktops to mobile employees and keep them productive, even when they’re off-line. Laureyns’ team also expects IDV to help avoid the costly infrastructure build out required for a VDI solution.

The team conducted an IDV proof-of-concept study with Intel and Lenovo using Intel® vPro™ technology and Citrix* XenClient*.1 They were impressed with the ability to run an off-line image that users could replicate back to the data center when they had connectivity—a benefit that would save productivity for mobile employees in the event of a hard-drive failure, and reduce security and backup burdens.

1. Intel vPro technology is sophisticated and requires setup and activation. Availability of features and results will depend upon the setup and configuration of your hardware, software, and IT environment. To learn more, visit intel.com/technology/vpro.
