As part of this initiative Imagine and Intel announced a broad ranging collaboration to promote Imagine’s WiMAX service in Ireland. Imagine is now offering new 4G services based on WiMAX to meet the rapidly increasing consumer demand for mobile broadband access to the Internet. Working closely with OEMs and across the mobile WiMAX ecosystem, Intel will provide the technology for embedded WiMAX laptops – coming to Ireland in 2010 - based on Intel® Centrino® 2 processor technology to enable mobile WiMAX services. The two companies will also work with PC vendors to deliver a range of initiatives and promotional activities to drive the adoption of WiMAX in Ireland.

Launched by An Taoiseach Brian Cowen in Dublin’s Mansion House, the Taoiseach said that the new WiMax network represents another important foundation in the development of the Smart Economy which will bring about economic renewal.

“The Smart Economy is about nurturing the products and services of tomorrow and providing sustainable jobs for our citizens. WiMax is of particular importance and it ensures Ireland will have the necessary connectivity to successfully compete as a trading digital economy”, the Taoiseach said.

Also speaking at the WiMAX launch was Sean Bolger, Imagine’s CEO, who said that “WiMAX is a world - leading access technology that can be rolled out more cost-effectively than fibre and cable broadband. This means that we can provide high-speed broadband and phone services faster to more people across Ireland cost effectively. This has to be good news for Irish consumers and businesses especially in the current environment,” Mr Bolger said.

Jim OHara, General Manger Intel Ireland, and Vice President Technology Manufacturing Group, Intel, said that the introduction of WiMAX is of huge significance, “Digital infrastructure is one of the key building blocks for growth in the country over the coming years and this work that Imagine are doing is a great example of broadband technology which will enable Ireland to compete in the 21st global economy. Technologies like WiMAX remove physical barriers and allow Ireland to leap-frog ahead through the provision of ubiquitous, affordable connectivity” Mr. O’Hara concluded.
