Programming with Hyper-Threading Technology

On page 140, the formula for Amdahl's Law to fit HT Technology should read:

SpeedupHTT =                     1
                          S + (1 - S)/(0.67n) + Hn

This acknowledgments page was inadvertently omitted from the first printing of the book.

Books are team efforts. Were it not for the work of project managers, editors, and technical reviewers, this book -- like many others -- would quite simply not exist. Stuart Goldstein at Intel Press oversaw this project and expertly guided all members of the team towards the timely delivery of a quality manuscript. David Spencer and David J. Clark wielded blue pencils that made this book more readable and the technical information it contains more approachable.

The authors are deeply indebted to the technical reviewers of the manuscript, who made many corrections and important suggestions. Special thanks go to Clay Breshears of Intel Corporation for his extremely thorough review, detailed comments, and deep understanding of threading. Russ Arnold and Will Damon of Intel Corporation also provided us with excellent suggestions and caught numerous infelicities in expression. Were it not for their care and kindness, this book would never have reached the level of quality that we were intent on delivering.

The following reviewers also contributed opinions and comments that were valuable in improving the manuscript: Y. K. Chen, Henry Gabb, Michael Greenfield, Phil Kerly (whose excellent articles were also a source of considerable assistance), Eric Moore, Sara Sarmiento, and Birju Shah. The structure of the book was reviewed by Oleksiy Danikhno (A4Vision, Inc.), Frank Barchard (Electronic Arts Canada), Thomas Kinsman (Kodak), Steven Skrzyniarz (Siren Systems) and Martin Watt (Alias). Their thoughtful comments provided invaluable validation in the choice of topics, examples, and materials.

Hardware for testing the code and the various technical contentions made in the book was provided from two sources, for which the authors are deeply indebted. Tim Constance of Hewlett-Packard loaned two Intel workstations for purposes of testing and benchmarking. We are also indebted to Alan Zeichick, whose company, Camden Associates, performs highly regarded hardware reviews for InfoWorld and other technical magazines. He lent us a dual-processor workstation configured with Linux for testing Pthreads code.

In addition to all this help, the authors wish to acknowledge and thank their respective families for the forbearance they showed and the support they provided during the composition of the manuscript. To quote Octavio Paz, we conclude "...with two words that all men have uttered since the dawn of humanity: thank you."
